Our wonderful Library houses over 8,000 volumes on the first floor of our main building, and is used extensively by Students, Faculty, and Parents throughout the year. All materials are catalogued electronically. In addition to our extensive collection of Picture Books and books for Early and Middle readers, we have significant collections of Fiction, Poetry, Biographies, Geography, and a variety of topics that arise regularly in our curriculum. We also have a collection of titles that parents have found useful on topics such as parenting, adoption, and loss. Our library is an integral part of our curriculum in all grades, and is used constantly by patrons of all ages.
Science activities take place in two rooms. One, located on the top floor of our main building, is devoted to students in Grades 3 and up and their science investigations. The other, located in the basement of the Jessie Bullens-Crewe building, is devoted to the science activities of our
younger students. Both serve as indoor laboratories for students to explore the extensive wonders of the natural world
The Jessie Bullens-Crewe Nature Preserve (JessieLand) is our 21 acre nature preserve, located 15 minutes from school just off I-295 in Cumberland, Maine. It offers nature trails, a rain shelter, and bathroom facilities. It is used throughout the year by students of all ages as part of our curriculum, providing them with a safe and idyllic place to discover the natural wonders of the world in which we live.
Art happens in our large, amply fenestrated studio on the third floor of our Brick Building. This room offers tables for work with clay, collages, and prints, as well as room for easels when students are drawing or painting. Our parents helped us acquire a kiln several years ago, which is heavily used by our students as they produce a variety of glazed and unglazed works. This room is a part of our beautiful new Integrated Arts Studio.
Breakwater’s Auditorium is on the first floor of the Jessie Bullens-Crewe building. This room is used for weekly school assemblies along with occasional dramatic productions and musical performances.
Breakwater's Music is held in our Integrated Arts Studio on the third floor of the Brick Building. This is a dramatic and beautiful setting for all grade levels to create music.
Construction of the Daniel N. Crewe Multi-purpose Building and Gymnasium (“The Dan”), was completed in the spring of 2004. Since then, neither Recess nor Physical Education has had to be weather-dependent during mud season. We also make extensive use of this building for major events such as Graduation, our annual Auction, and the Book Sale. This building houses an elementary-school sized basketball court and a climbing wall, along with several offices.
The Big Toy serves as the nucleus of our K-5 Playground. Slides, monkey bars, rings, and tires provide a range of activities, complemented by the adjacent blacktop (used for four-square, wall-ball, and general pandemonium) and field (used for kickball, stickball, snowshoeing, and many other things).
Two of our classrooms primarily serve Kindergarten students. They are located adjacent to one another downstairs in our main building, and offer large open spaces that can be arranged to suit just about any activity. Students often move between the classrooms during the course of the day in order to use stations that have been set up in the other room, or to socialize with friends during snack or lunch times. Each room has a cubby area for student hats, coats, snack packs, and other stuff so that students do not need to leave the room to get ready for, or return from, outdoor activities or recess.
Three of our classrooms serve First and Second Grade students. They are all located at one end of the middle floor of our main building. Each has space for student cubbies either in the room or immediately adjacent to the room, and two of the rooms are connected. The curriculum for these grades provides many opportunities for students to work with students from the other classrooms, and all three teachers share in the presentation of many topics to all students in these grades.
Three of our classrooms serve Third and Fourth Grade students. They are all located at one end of the top floor of our main building. Each has space for student cubbies adjacent to the room, and two of the rooms are connected. The curriculum for these grades also provides many opportunities for students to work with students from the other classrooms, and all three teachers share in the presentation of many topics to all students in these grades.
Fifth Grade has two Classrooms located at the other end of the hallway leading to the Third and Fourth Grade classes. These rooms are also interconnected, and share a lounge area located immediately outside of the classrooms. The Fifth Grade curriculum is active and varied, and often spills out of the classroom into the lounge for small group presentations or discussions.
