Updates from BCA

We have new and exciting classes and staffing to announce for the 2009 BCA season!

As always students will choose from over 40 courses in visual and performing arts, sports, and writing. This includes a show tunes chorus, filmmaking, building a sonic sculpture that makes music, rock band, publishing a newspaper, and much more.

Please welcome Kate Kaminski, our new filmmaking teacher. Kate joins us from USM and brings with her, many years of teaching and making movies. We will be offering a weaving workshop taught by Suzanne Van Wye. Barbara Woods of the Metropolitan Museum of Art (previously a guest artist) will stay on for the whole summer, teaming up with our own Kelly McConnell. Our full 2009 course roster will be posted on our website in a couple of weeks.

Here are a few samples from our 2009 selections:

Museum Exploration: Discover the world of art in Portland!
Travel to exciting and new places in your own backyard! Join Museum Educators, Barbara Woods and Kelly McConnell, as we explore local museums and galleries such as the Portland Museum of Art, SPACE, and The Institute of Contemporary Art at MECA to discover cool ideas in contemporary art. In this class designed for older children, students will have the opportunity to visit local exhibitions and then make their own artwork inspired by the work on view. New ideas and trends in art will be discussed, and students will be given a chance to meet artists and people working in the venues that drive Portland's dynamic art community.

Mixed Media Sculpture and Collage: Art can be made of anything!
Have you ever wanted to create your own magical world in art? Students will have the opportunity to create mixed media sculptures and collages by combining various materials such as paper, wood, metal, plastic and found objects in inventive ways. We will discuss the work of contemporary artists, "Visionary Artists", the Cubists, sculptors such as Eva Hesse and Joseph Cornell, and others who found ways to use materials for art-making in ways never seen before. This is a class for students who are skilled in working with a variety of media in both two and three dimensions, and who think inventively!

Detention! The Musical! (or How our Principal Tried to Take Over the World)
Join us for our first original full-length musical production!! During the "Write the BCA Musical" festival period offering in Summer 2008 campers and teachers collaborated to create, "Detention! The Musical!" An evil principal has kept an unusual group of students for detention. I wonder why? Perhaps it's because he is a big bad voodoo daddy and wants to cast some evil mojo on the kids and take over the world!! A "can't miss" spectacular!

Billy Bob Breakwater's Breakneck Bonanza! (Traveling Teen Troupe)
This year's Teen Troupe will be on the road with an all-original old time radio show! Based on public radio's popular "Prairie Home Companion" format, we'll have sound effects, cowboys, private detectives, and plenty of singing and dancing! But what goes on behind the scenes? Of course, there's plenty of DRAMA!! It's a good thing this group is on 'radio'. You won't believe your eyes!
