Financial Aid Instructions and Timeline: 2010 - 2011 School Year
The financial aid season is upon us! The deadline for returning families to complete their financial aid application is January 15, 2010. Newly applying families have a deadline of February 15, 2010. The primary responsibility lies with the student’s family to make sure the application is completed on time. The aid budget can typically be depleted by applications received by the deadline. The Financial Aid page of the Breakwater website has pertinent information about the financial aid process that should be reviewed before starting your Parent Financial Statement (PFS).
We use School and Student Services (SSS), a service of the National Association of Independent Schools, to process our financial aid applications. SSS has made upgrades to this year's process and one of the most significant changes is that you will now provide all of your financial and tax information directly to SSS.
Breakwater will no longer store your income and tax information. This provides security for your documents and facilitates the process of information verification. Please contact Moriah Perry with any questions.
To begin your financial aid application for the 2010-11 school year, follow the steps below. If you would like a paper copy of the PFS, you may obtain it in the front office.
- Go online to sss.nais.org.
- Click on the prompt to begin your Parents’ Financial Statement (PFS). You only need to complete one PFS even if you have several children applying to Breakwater.
- You will be given a username and password that will allow you to return to your PFS at a later date before submitting it. The Breakwater School code is 1792. Your information will be secure.
- Mail directly to SSS Income and Tax Documentation. You will be given instructions about submitting supporting documents to SSS. These documents will include the following:
- Copy of 2008 Federal Income Tax return, signed, and all IRS 1040 schedules and W-2 forms.
- Copy of 2009 W-2 forms and copy of 2009 Federal Income Tax return, signed, and all IRS 1040 schedules (as soon as available)
- 4506-T Tax verification form signed and undated.
Additional Information may be required if applicable:
- Business/Farm – If either parent owns a business or farm, send a completed copy of the Business/Farm Statement for each separate entity.
- Tax documentation for partnerships and corporations is also required. (IRS Schedule K-1, Form 1065, Form 1120, or Form 1120s)
