Daily Schedule

One of the keys of Breakwater’s integrative Middle School program is that it offers large blocks of time for students to explore a topic deeply. Each week, students explore and practice skills in mathematics, physical education, reading, science, social studies, foreign language, visual and performing arts, and writing. These lessons are not always divided into special subject blocks and are most often integrated into activities related to the theme under study. Students generally spend two to three full days a week on campus, with other days featuring field work in the community. The 2007-2008 Middle School theme is World History and Emerging Civil Societies.

The following schedule represents a day that followed a field visit to a furniture maker within the learning expedition Community Service and the Goods Industry:

Morning Meeting: Students and teachers discuss and plan the day’s schedule. This activity develops time-management and organizational
skills. Students also share thoughts and ideas that arose after their visit with the furniture maker.

Writing Workshop: Using an editing checklist and a rubric of standards for good writing, students proofread a partner’s three-page essay on the history of furniture and offer constructive feedback. This experience helps students develop skills in grammar and in evaluating their own work as well as that of a peer.

Math Workshop: Students project a cost estimate for building a series of bookshelves (to be donated to a group home for middle school
students) using a bookshelf design and cost list for raw products. Students learn skills in accounting and business economics, which
correspond with state standards in math and social studies.

Language Arts: After reading the article “Why do we make myths?” students discuss the role of myth and story in an emerging society and
plan an art project to illustrate a particular culture’s myths. This activity increases reading comprehension and the ability to connect abstract
principles to specific texts, a skill needed in high school and beyond.

Lunch: Sharing a meal is an important part of creating a strong classroom community. With a kitchen available, students choose to bring a
lunch or prepare one together, learning practical skills, cooperation, good health and nutrition. Our on-site garden provides opportunities to
make fresh vegetables a part of lunch time and for students to learn about sustainable resources.

Physical Education/Movement: Instruction and practice in martial arts promotes balance, coordination, and self-discipline.

Foreign Language: This year, Spanish was the foreign language our students studied. Each year, we explore new ideas for language study,
all connected to the on-going theme.

End of the Day Meeting: Daily reflections and preview of upcoming events and activities, as well as review of homework assignments.
